The fourth film produced during Disney’s Renaissance period, John Musker and Ron Clements released this movie on November 25th, 1992, loosely based on the Arab folktale “One Thousand and One Nights.”
Set in Agrabah, we begin the movie with a merchant (Robin Williams) beginning the tale of One Thousand and One Nights. It cuts to Jafar (Jonathon Freeman), The Sultan’s (Douglas Seale) Grand Vizier, and his pet parrot Iago (Gilbert Gottfried) seeking the magic lamp in the Cave of Wonders but the cave denies his entry stating “Only a Diamond in the rough may enter.” Afar returns to the palace and uses magic to identify the one who happens to be a street urchin named Aladdin.
Meanwhile Aladdin (Scott Weigner) and Abu (Frank Welker) his pet monkey are in the marketplace stealing food when they come upon a beautiful girl who is getting in trouble. Aladdin shows her his hideaway not knowing that its Princess Jasmine (Linda Larkin) in disguise having left the palace sic of her royal duties. As the two are uniting in friendship and falling in love, Jafar uses this to his advantage. He alerts the guards who capture Aladdin, sending him to the dungeon before his execution. Jafar offers to marry Princess Jasmine, whose furious.
Back in the dungeon, Jafar has disguised himself as an old man, convincing Aladdin to escape to the Cave of Wonders to retrieve the lamp. At the cave, Aladdin and Abu befriend a magic carpet and grab the magic lamp but Abu also takes a forbidden Jewel causing the cave to collapse. Surviving, Aladdin rubs the lamp, waking Genie (Robin Williams). Genie tells Aladdin that he has to grant him three wishes but Aladdin tricks Genie into freeing them without using a wish. Genie dubs him “Prince Ali of Ababwa.”
Aladdin returns to the palace in his prince disguise but doesn’t tell Jasmine the truth but she figures it out during their magic carpet ride. Aladdin however plays it off like he is royal but doesn’t want to be one. Aladdin returns Jasmine to the castle where he gets ambushed by Jafar. Jafar tries to drown Aladdin but Genie saves him.
Returning to his room in the castle, Jafar wishes to be the Sultan. This allows Jafar to become Genie’s new master when the lamp gets stolen. Jafar wishes to be the Sultan and the most powerful sorcerer, but when he tries to wish for Jasmine to fall in love with him, Genie refuses.
Meanwhile Aladdin, Abu and Magic Carpet is exiled to a wasteland but they escape and return to the palace to save Genie and Jasmine. Jasmine sees Aladdin and flirts with him to distract Jafar but Jafar see through the plan and traps Jasmins in an hourglass. Afar then changes into a cobra taunting Aladdin that he’s the most powerful but Aladdin replies that Genie is more powerful. Successfully tricking Jafar, Jafar uses his last wish to become a Genie. Aladdin is able to trap both Jafar and Iago into the new lamp and sends it far, far away.
The palace reverts itself back to normal. Genie tells Aladdin to wish to be a prince so he can marry Jasmine but the Sultan realizes that the two are in love and agree to the marriage. Aladdin wishes Genie to be free and be true to himself. Sultan changes the law to allow Aladdin and Jasmine’s engagement while Genie leaves to travel the world.
Another film I love but I need to say that since the live action came out, I prefer that version as does my 7 year old. Don’t get me wrong, I love Robin Williams as the Genie and all the cool easter eggs you can find in the film but the music is 10x better in the live action. I do think its really cool that Jasmine has her Tiger, Raja, who has so much personality. I mean who wouldn’t want a tiger? But shh, don’t tell Carole Baskin. Genie also has some great expressions so I’m signing off with this clip
