Movie Review: Monsters Inc (2001)

Pete Docter, Jill Colton, Jeff Pidgeon and Ralph Eggleston began working on the story in 1996. Soon Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson joined the team to finish the screenplay. Released on November 2nd, 2001, the movie follows two monsters, James P “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) and his best friend Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal). Set in Metropolis city, monsters use the screams of human children as energy for power. Sulley and Mike were the top scarerers until one day their biggest competitor Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi), had left an activated door open on the scare floor. A young girl, Boo (Mary Gibbs), had snuck into the factory, but before Sulley could return her home, Randall had sent the door back. Sulley manages to hide Boo and gets her out of the factory undetected.

Sulley takes Boo to a sushi restaurant, where Mike and his girlfriend Cecilia (Jennifer Tilly ) are having a date. Sulley interrupts them, asking Mike for help. Panic ensues when someone discovers that Boo is a human. Sulley sweeps Boo up, and they, along with Mike rush her to their shared apartment. While trying to figure out what to do with her, Boo falls asleep.

The next morning, Mike and Sulley sneak Boo back into the factory disguised as a baby monster. Randall finds out and tries to abduct Boo but gets Mike instead.  Randall straps Mile to a new machine called the scream extractor, which he planned on weaponizing to gain energy from kidnapped human children, solving the energy problem. Randall tries to use the machine but Sulley disables it in time. Sulley dress Mike and reports Randall to their boss, Waternoose (James Coburn) but they quickly learn that he is teamed up with Randall. Waternoose sends Mike and Sulley to the Himalayan’s, where they meet the abominable snowman (John Ratzenberger ). The abominable snowman helps them by showing them where the nearest village is. Sulley prepares to return to the factory but Mike refuses.

Meanwhile, Randall is about to use the scream extractor on Boo but Sulley comes barging in, destroying the machine and saving Boo. Sulley and Randall fight but Sulley is able to overpower him with Mike’s help. Mike followed Sulley back in order to reconcile their friendship. They flee, taking Boo with the,

Sulley and Mike go looking for Boo’s door, while doing so Randall gives chase. Boo starts laughing, activating all the doors. Sulley and Mike use this to their advantage and trap Randall in the human world.

Boo, Mike and Sulley return to the scare floor with Boo’s door in place. Waternoose appears and admits to his plan, not wanting the company to go under. Mike had recorded Waternoose’s statement and played it back to the CDA, who had shown up to arrest Mike and Sulley, but instead they took Waternoose into custody. Roz(Bob Peterson), the secretary, appears and reveals that not only was she the CDA director but that for the last three years shes been trying to expose Waternoose. She orders Sulley and Mike to return Boo to her home, then shred the door.

Sulley was then named the new C.E.O of Monsters Inc. The first thing he did was change using children’s screams to children’s laughter for energy. Mike became the top comedian and in honor of his best friend, Mike restored Boo’s door, giving Sulley another chance to visit her.

So this movie is so underrated and really between this and Brave, sparked the Pixar Theory by Jon Negroni. Honestly though, this movie has so many cool easter eggs linking movies past and present, who wouldn’t get aboard some of the cool theories that have popped up. It also explains how man of the alternate worlds get powered through Human Emotions. Signing off with my favorite scene.
