T.V Series Review: Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 (2012)

Hawaii Five-0 is a police procedural series developed for television by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Peter M. Lenkov, based on the 1968 series of the same name created by Leonard Freeman. It premiered on CBS on Monday, September 20, 2010, 42 years to the day from the premiere of the original show, September 20, 1968. The title of each episode is in Hawaiian rather than English.

The series covers the actions of a small special state task force created by the Governor of Hawaii, Pat Jameson, to investigate serious crimes throughout the Islands, as Hawaii does not have a conventional state police force. The team is headed by Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, USNR (and former Navy SEAL) as it investigates crimes ranging from terrorism to kidnapping. McGarrett chooses as his partner Honolulu PD (and former Newark PD) Detective Danny Williams, and together McGarrett and Williams lead a team that includes Capt. Lou Grover, Adam Noshimuri, Quinn Liu, Junior Reigns and Tani Rey.

Episode 1 – Mother’s Day

Season Premiere. As Steve struggles to come to terms with the news that his supposedly dead mother is alive and also the mysterious “Shelburne”, a grief-stricken Chin attempts to cope with his wife’s death as the H50 team prepare a final showdown, pitting them against dirty cop Frank Delano and his crew.

Episode 2 – Doubt

As the team seek to find a motive for an art heist that ends in tragedy when the remains of the getaway driver are found, Steve calls on Catherine to protect his mother.

Episode 3 – Adrift

A day out at sea for Steve and Danny turns deadly when they end up being hijacked and left to die in the ocean. In the process, the two soon discover a body on board an abandoned boat which has them realizing that their hijacking may be connected to the victim.

Episode 4 – Misfortune

A polo player is decapitated by garroting wire and as the team investigate, they discover that the death could be connected to be a kidnapping case that occurred ten years ago while Doris McGarrett returns.

Episode 5 – Offering

As Hawaii celebrates Halloween, the team investigate the grisly murder of a young college student and discover that the killer may have kidnapped a second victim.

Episode 6 – In a Time Past

After shooting a terrorist, Danny is forced to remain perfectly still after it’s discovered that the terrorist has a bomb that is motion-sensor activated. To take his mind off things, Steve asks Danny to recall a case he worked on in New Jersey and on the day 9/11 occurred.

Episode 7 – The Secret

As Steve attempts to stage a reunion between his mother and sister, the team investigate the murder of a young computer hacker who was recently released from jail.

Episode 8 – Evil Woman

Steve clashes with a therapist who he believes may be a murderer responsible for killing her patients.

Episode 9 – Death Wish

The team investigative the motive for a bank robbery while Danny must protect a Victoria’s Secret model from a stalker.

Episode 10 – Field Trip

An Aloha Girls camping trip turns into a nightmare for Steve and Danny when an armed man takes Steve and a little girl hostage while Kono meets Adam’s brother.

Episode 11 – Guardian

It’s Christmas in Hawaii but Steve and Catherine find themselves helping a young boy whose father may be in grave danger.

Episode 12 – Forbidden

As the team investigate the death of a college professor. Kono finds herself being given the assignment of guarding a familiar face.

Episode 13 – Death Sentence

Chin is drugged and later awakens in Halawa Correctional Facility where faces from his past return with a vengeance and upon discovering where Chin is, Steve, Danny and Kono launch a rescue operation to save Chin before it’s too late.

Episode 14 – Scandal

Governor Denning asks the H50 team to investigate the killing of a local woman who may be connected to a congressman campaigning for re-election while Danny battles to ensure that Grace stays in Hawaii.

Episode 15 – Hookman

A HPD officer is assassinated while serving as an escort at a funeral. As the H50 team investigate, Steve discovers that the killer is a man his father arrested some twenty years ago but things take a turn when the team learn that Steve is one of the targets…

Episode 16 – Warrior

As the team investigate the murder of a Lua (ancient Hawaiian hand-to-hand combat) master, they realize that Kamekona may be involved while Steve hires a Private Investigator to go after his mother.

Episode 17 – The Game

As Hawaii gets ready for the All-Pro football game, the team investigate the murder of a tech executive who was shot dead during a tactical ops team building exercise.

Episode 18 – Dolls

When a murder victim falls onto Dog the Bounty Hunter’s SUV while he and his team are arresting their latest suspect, the H50 team investigate and find that the victim belonged to a roller derby group. But when the leads dry up, Catherine goes in undercover to get more information with things taking a turn for the worse when the team realize that Catherine could be in great 

Episode 19 – Close Friend

The team investigate a series of arson fires on a group of boats belonging to the Oahu Shark Tours. When the owner’s brother is found dead in a submerged shark cage, the team dig deeper and in the process, uncover a plot of betrayal, greed and murder with Steve, Danny and Chin being forced to fight for their lives after the local Triad arrive while everyone doubts as to whether Kamekona will get his helicopter licence or not.

Episode 20 – The Promise

Steve and Catherine head to North Korea to find and bring the remains of one of Steve’s fellow Navy SEALs, only to find themselves fighting for their lives against a group of enemies who want them dead.

Episode 21 – Seek Within One’s Soul

The H50 team allow a talk show host and her crew to follow them while they investigate the death of a man associated with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Episode 22 – To Take Captive

The team investigate when the body of a girl who had been missing for ten years is discovered with the case hitting close to home for Danny.

Episode 23 – Family Business

The team investigate when a security guard’s body is found in a small hole, leading them to suspect that the area is a graveyard the Yazuka have been using to dump their victims for the last twenty years while Steve helps his mother with a top-secret operation

Episode 24 – Farewell and Take Care

Season Finale. The team discover a plane with four bodies on board and soon discover that the killings may be connected to a upcoming terrorist attack.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Another season full of crime, action and comedy. I can’t get enough of the bromance between McGarret and Danny.
