Movie Review: Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (2005)

Another magical adventure in the Hundred Acre Woods based on A.A. Moline’s Winnie the Poohstories, this movie was released on February 11th, 2005. Winnie the Pooh (Jim Cummings) and his friends hear a strange sound one day and find large circular footprints. During the night Tigger’s (Jim Cummings) home was damaged by what could be an earthquake. Pooh, Tigger, Piglet (John Fiedler), Rabbit (Ken Sansom), and Roo (Nikita Hopkins), believe that it’s the Heffalump. Rabbit gathers them together to hunt the Heffalump down. Too who is excited to help is told that he’s too small to go. The friends make a plan on how to trap the Heffalump but Roo has already packed a bag and slipped through the gate into the woods. Determined to show his friends that he can do it, Roo continues deep into the woods when he hears a noise. Investigating, he comes upon a young Heffalump named Lumpy (Kyle Stanger). Roo captures Lumpy but the two boys quickly become friends, laughing and playing. After a while, they hear Lumpy’s mom calling but Roo wants Lumpy to meet his friends. Roo tries to get him to come back with him but Lumpy is scared of “ the things that live there.” Roo reassures Lumpy and they go over the fence to go to the Hundred Acre Woods but no one is home since everyone is searching for the Heffalump. The two new friends play some more making a mess in Pooh’s house and of Rabbit’s garden. They hear Lumpy’s mom calling again and they go looking for her.

After hours of searching for Lumpy’s mom and no luck, Lumpy starts to cry. Roo cheers Lumpy up with a song and suggests they go find Kanga (Kath Soucie), Roo’s mom, who would know what to do. So they head back towards the Hundred Acre Woods.

Meanwhile, Pooh, Tiger, Piglet and Rabbit have returned to the Hundred Acre Woods where they find Pooh’s home a mess and Rabbit’s garden destroyed. Kanga tells them that Roo is missing but soon Lumpy and Roo emerge from the woods. Pooh and his friends believe that the Heffalump captured Roo and refuse to listen to Roo as they attempt to save him. Lumpy, scared as he was, goes running. Roo follows, finding Lumpy trapped in one of the contraptions his friends made. Roo frees Lumpy, as Kanga watches from behind a tree, noting that the two boys are friends.

Rabbit, Pooh, Piglet, and Tigger arrive lassoing Lumpy but Roo yells at them to stop. Roo explains how Heffalumps aren’t mean and scary. Lumpy stumbles accidentally knocking Roo into a pile of heavy logs that were laid to make a bridge over a ditch. The friends try to reach Roo but they need help. Lumpy calls for his mom, who comes to the rescue. Ending the movie with a new friendship.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I remember this film and the Halloween one from when I was a kid. I swear it came out earlier than 2005 but I do still have mine on VHS. Yes I am that old, don’t hate. Anyway, we finally meet a heffalump, instead of just singing about them in. It is a great animated family movie for the whole family.
