Lion King Summary

Lion King is the 32nd Disney film to be released and the 5th during the Renaissance period. Released on June 15th, 1994, The Lion King begins with the introduction of Simba (Matthew Broderick and James Taylor Thomas), son to King Mufasa (Hames Earl Jones) and Queen Serabi (Madge Sinclair).  Rafiki (Robert Guillaume) the shaman baboon, reveals the newborn to the animals of the pride lands. The movie skips forward to Simba being a little older. His father Mufasa shows him the kingdom and explains the “Circle of Life.” Meanwhile, Scar (Jeremy Irons), the king’s younger brother, is plotting to take over the throne.

Knowing Simba’s wild side, Scar tricks him into exploring the elephant’s graveyard with his best friend and future wife, Nala (Nikita Calame-Harris and Moira Kelly). Shenzi (Whoopi Goldberg), Bonzai (Chechen Martin), and Ed (Jim Cummings), three spotted hyenas, attack the cubs until Zazu (Rowan Atkinson) warns Mufasa, who comes rushing into the rescue. Mufasa ends up lecturing Simba about the Kings of the sky watching over them and that when Simba is King, they will help guide him as well.

Scar sets up another trap to get rid of Mufasa and Simba. Scar lures Simba into a gorge while the hyenas scare a herd of wildebeests towards him. Scar tells Mufasa that Simba’s in trouble. Mufasa swoops in to save Simba once again but his life hangs on the edge. Mufasa calls to Scar for help but Scar throws him over. Scar convinces Simba that it is all his fault and that Simba should disappear. Simba listens to his uncle and runs away not knowing that the hyenas were sent after him. Scar returns to the pride lands telling the story that both Mufasa and Simba were killed in the stampede.

Meanwhile, Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), a meerkat and warthog both black sheep’s of their families, found Simba lying in the desert. They save Simba and teach him their carefree lifestyle. The three friends stay together until Simba ends up rescuing Timon and Pumbaa. The lioness that attacked them was Nala, who tells Simba of all the horror under Scar’s control, including the drought. Nala begs Simba to return with her but he gets angry and runs away. Simba bumps into Rafiki, who guides Simba back to his father’s spirit, which is always watching. Mufasa’s spirit visits him in the sky and tells Simba that he must return to take the throne.

With the help of his friends, Simba can get by the distracted hyenas to confront Scar. Scar has Queen Serabi trapped and turns to taunt Simba as he backs him up to the top of pride rock. Simba goes after Scar as Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu Serabi and Nala take care of the hyenas. Scar begs for mercy but all Simba does is ban him from the pride lands. Simba lets up but Scar attacks him. In defense, Simba tosses him off of pride rock only to be killed by the hyenas. Simba takes over as king and Nala is named queen. Simba restores pride rock’s glory. In the end, Rafiki holds up baby Kiara as the circle of life continues.

Lion King Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Lion King will always be seen as a classic from the 90s. It is part of our hearts and has an amazing soundtrack. So don’t hate on me when I say, it is not my favorite film or even in the top 10. I do think it is a fantastic film and I can absolutely jam out or will terribly sing along, but it is not a film I would choose to watch to cheer up. That being said, it is a must watch at least once in your life, especially if you call yourself a Disney fan. Signing off with my favorite song
